ONE REFURB, 30 DEADLINES – THE CHALLENGE OF TERM-TIME SCHOOL WORK
School refurbishments always involve strict time limits but for Spectus fabricator Jade Windows, the team faced more than 30 deadlines in one single school contract.
The complete exterior refurb at St Thomas à Becket Catholic Secondary School in Wakefield was too extensive even for the summer holidays so the whole thing had to be done in term-time, as Jade’s Ryan Fozard explained:
“This meant we had to work one room at a time and finish each one in time for the students to move back in so they could vacate the next one. And, to add to that, we had to synchronise with the cladding team on every one of them.”
Jade, an established member of the Spectus Approved Window Contractor network, working with main contractor Bermar Building of Bradford, manufactured and installed around 200 anthracite grey casements windows in the Spectus Elite bevelled system. The contract saw Jade on site for almost six months including several gaps to coordinate with cladding contractors.
Jade has been fabricating and installing the Spectus Elite system for 15 years. In the case of the St Thomas à Becket contract, PVC-U had been specified from the start, in anthracite to complement the cladding design. However, the fabricator has recently won a number of contracts by making the case for anthracite on PVC-U as an alternative to specified aluminium, and has also begun fabricating Spectus’s new Flush Tilt & Turn system alongside Elite for that reason.
Ryan Fozard concluded: “The Thomas à Becket contract did have its challenges in terms of working to deadlines and coordinating with the other contractors but the result made it all worthwhile. The entire school looks superb, just like a completely new building.
“The Spectus Elite system not only looked right for the job, it also had the technical spec that helped to win the contract as well as ensuring the windows go on performing.”
